The University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy is pleased to announce the hiring of three core faculty members—Hallie Zeleznik, PT, DPT, Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist; and Caitlyn Crawford, PT, DPT, Board Certified Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist. A third individual with expertise in neurologic physical therapy to support the hybrid option has also been hired with a start date of August 1 and will be announced later this spring.

The PAS Hybrid program has completed its first didactic year. To end their third and final semester of classes, 96 students filled the halls and exam rooms of the Murdoch building to demonstrate their skills in suturing, splinting and head-to-toe examinations before celebrating their transition from didactic student to clinical student with their white coat ceremony. These clinical students are now in supervised clinical practice across the country.

After receiving my undergraduate degree in Rehabilitation and Health Services from Penn State, I came to the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a Doctor in Occupational Therapy (OTD) degree through the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS).

The University of Pittsburgh has named Pamela Toto director of its ground-breaking Healthy Home Lab (HHL). Formerly a multi-generational family home, the HHL is now a living laboratory in the University’s Oakland neighborhood where researchers across the University are designing and testing real-world, evidence-based solutions that will support community living among aging adults, people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations.

The Dietitian Nutritionist (DN) Program offers an entry point for students who obtained a bachelor’s degree from a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at another accredited institution prior to coming to SHRS, allowing them to then obtain a Master of Science degree through Pitt’s DN Program. These students will complete two years in the DN Program, fulfilling 60 credits as opposed to the traditional three-year program for the other program entry points. While completing the two years of courses, all students complete supervised experiential learning which is divided into three major rotations: Community and Public Health Nutrition, Food Service Management and Clinical.

Varun Patel is a second-year student in the Sports Medicine (SM) program at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). Last year, Patel presented a poster at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Mid-Atlantic Chapter, where he shared his research findings on military injuries.

The Pitt OT Occupational Justice (OJ) Discussion program was designed to create a more inclusive learning and work environment and a department-wide culture that not only understands that justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) are essential but creates connection and real belonging. The OJ Discussion program serves as a space for students, faculty and staff to reflect, share thoughts and act on issues related to JEDI and health disparities

Department of Occupational Therapy faculty Ann Marsico, Cara Lekovitch and Ketki Raina have been making strides in refining the Doctor of Occupational Therapy fieldwork program over the last year. Two new components – “Mission Possible” and “Stop, Talk, Roll” – have been added to the fieldwork program to promote students’ understanding of the clinical working environment and ability to navigate difficult situations in fieldwork.

During my first term as a Pitt Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) student, I had the privilege of joining Assistant Professor Emily Grattan's Vision and Perception Research Laboratory, an experience that significantly enriched my academic journey. Within this dynamic research environment, I acquired invaluable insights into the assessment and treatment of stroke related visual perceptual disorders, in addition to the collaborative field of low vision rehabilitation.

FACETS Magazine Feature: The ability to change comes naturally to Counseling alumna Katlyn Kohne (MS ’16). Her career has taken her from mental health counseling at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, where she worked with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder, to rehabilitation counseling at the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, helping teens and young adults with disabilities pursue their goals of employment and independence.

My name is Brittany Platt and I have a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Pitt Greensburg. I am from Glenshaw just north of Pittsburgh. I decided to complete Pitt’s Master of Rehabilitation Technology (MRT) program because I’ve had epilepsy since I was 8 years old and multiple surgeries to remove a part of my left temporal lobe. The final surgery resulted in a brain infection that required me to be in rehab for over 20 days during my senior year of college. I enrolled in the MRT program to help other people who have disabilities live their best lives possible.

FACETS Magazine Feature: When Professor Paul Arciero arrived at SHRS’ Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition (SMN) in Aug., he was already a renowned nutrition and applied physiology scientist, keynote speaker and author. His academic credentials include more than 70 peer reviewed journal articles that primarily focus on two distinctive research paths—neuro-cognition and improved health and performance through nutrition and exercise. Arciero is excited about continuing these studies at Pitt, expanding his work even further.

B.J. Vascik is an orthopedic physician assistant with the Department of Veterans Affairs, VISN-4 Western Market V-Consult. He provides care at the Washington and Butler, PA, and Belmont, OH, clinics and also provides telehealth assessments for the Pittsburgh VA. Vascik graduated from Pitt’s online Doctor of PA Studies (DPAS) program in spring 2023. Here, he shares how the program has helped him elevate his health care management and research skills to improve his and his colleagues’ place of practice.
